My year of daily meditation
*Announcement* I launched a newsletter, Curious Expeditions, to share my thoughts on the content I create and consume. My goal is to help you look around corners, explore new ideas, and inspire you to dive deep on your own expedition. Topics will range from business, philosophy, empathy, sports, mental models, and more. I primarily explore ideas through fireside chats, books, articles, podcasts, and videos.

I have been meditating for 10 minutes every morning for over a year. The moment of peace helps jumpstart my day (similar to the “Rocket Start aka Turbo Start aka Boost Start aka Head Start” in Mario Kart — N64 version preferred).
I have noticed a number of benefits: heightened ability to stay calm during stressful situations (sounds like an X-Men superpower), heightened ability to be more present/focused (aka less distracted — has helped my Chess game A LOT), and more controlled breathing (which helps with the previous two).
To get the full benefits, practice meditating every day. It builds up, just like compound interest.
How did I get started you ask? Nov. 1, 2016 when I co-chaired the 2016 ThinkLA Trends Breakfast (photo below) and Russell Simmons kicked off the event with a 5 minute meditation session. I remember sitting next to Alexis Ohanian (who gave one of the best ThinkLA talks after, maybe the meditation helped…remember that day Alexis, felt likes ages ago!) and finding a moment of tranquility amongst 400+ LA media/advertising professionals. Stepping even farther into the time machine, I first learned about various breathing techniques used by professional athletes from Dr. Andy Walshe at our 2014 ThinkLA Trends Breakfast (photo below). But it was not until 2016 that I combined meditation + breathing.
Personally, I enjoy the Oak app. Simple and comes with three different breathing techniques. Screenshots of what I like, below.
